RCBC athlete earns Woman of the Year

Lauren Tomei Woman of the Year award recipient

Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC) Lady Baron, Lauren Tomei earned the Woman of the Year award at the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) awards luncheon on February 4, at Seton Hall University.

The association presents the Woman of the Year award to one outstanding athlete from each college and university in the state. This award is based upon athletic excellence, academic success and community service.

Tomei an RCBC Lady Baron soccer player, grew up in Chesterfield, New Jersey, where she could always be found at the local park playing soccer or running the track.

“This is where my love for soccer began. Even at a young age I enjoyed being active and constantly keeping up with a healthy lifestyle,” Tomei said.

A two-year starter and 2017 team captain for the Barons, Tomei received Academic All-Region XIX Team, RCBC Scholar-Athlete Award, RCBC All-Academic Team, First Team All-Region XIX, as well as, RCBC Women’s Soccer Coaches Award honors.

“I couldn't have received these titles or awards without my supportive teammates and my determined coaches,” Tomei said.

Tomei hopes to achieve a degree in Health and Exercise Science, with plans to go to graduate school and become an athletic trainer. She hopes to motivate and provide proper direction for student-athletes to better themselves on and off the playing field.

“Whether it be teaching individuals to build self-confidence, to discover their personal strengths, or to simply inform others on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I am up for the challenge,” Tomei said.

"Lauren has been an absolute pleasure to coach the past two years. She is a well-balanced student-athlete who set and achieved her academic and athletic goals while at RCBC,” Head Coach Kathleen DeLitta said. “Lauren continued to develop as a person and a player while on the women's soccer team and she is a fantastic representative for Rowan College at Burlington County as Women Athlete of the Year."

The anniversary of NGWSD is recognized on February 7. NGWSD celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
