Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy shares his story with RCBC sports media students

Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy and RCBC students in Neil Hartman's sports media class.

Tom McCarthy, the television voice of the Phillies, shared his inspirational story with sports media students at Rowan College at Burlington County on Thursday.

McCarthy, who also broadcasts NFL games for CBS, Major League Baseball for FOX and college football and basketball for CBS and WestwoodOne, provided professional guidance for students in the class of Neil Hartman, an Emmy Award winner who has worked at several regional outlets on television and radio.

McCarthy stressed the importance of preparation and diligence in broadcasting and spoke about a recent thrill of broadcasting a game with his son, Pat, who broadcasts for Princeton, St. Joe’s and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

In college, McCarthy studied biology before getting a job covering sports for the Times of Trenton. He encouraged students to keep all options open while pursuing their dreams.

“When someone asks you to do something, say ‘Yes.’ Say yes to everything,” McCarthy said. “You’ll figure out how later.”
