Whether you feel like you’re treading new ground or embarking on an exciting adventure, online classes are more manageable than you think. Unsure how to begin? Check out these tips!

  1. Treat an online course like a “real” course. Exercise the same level of discipline and focus you would for a physical class. Actively engage in online forums. Post questions, comment on your classmates’ work and read what others are saying!

  2. Practice time management. Even if you weren’t good at it before, now is your chance to make it work! Use a calendar. Make note of major assignments, create a weekly schedule and set reminders for yourself.

  3. Create a study space. You don’t need to have a fancy office or separate workroom to do this! It could be your kitchen table, a desk in the corner of your room or anywhere that’s quiet and removed from others. Wherever you choose, ensure you have hi-speed internet access.

  4. Eliminate distractions. Netflix, the laundry, your dog, that fly on the wall in the corner. You’ll have no shortage of distractions to derail your studies. The key is to limit them. Turn your cell phone off or download a website blocker, such as Cold Turkey or Freedom to block apps or websites that compete for your attention.

  5. Figure out how you learn best. When and how do you accomplish your best work? Are you a morning person or a night owl? If you’re a visual learner, print out transcripts of the video lesson to review. Prefer to listen? Build time into your schedule to play and replay all audio and video course content.
