The internship program provides an opportunity for students to gain workplace experience. The student is placed in a law office or other firm using paralegals, under the supervision of an attorney. The internship is guided by prescribed learning outcomes that are specific to the type and orientation of the law firm or business in which the student is placed.
Students must complete a minimum of 135 hours (approximately 9 hours a week over the course of a 15 week term). Students are encouraged to remain longer if the circumstances allow.
Student Requirements:
- Student interns are to maintain a log of hours worked and the tasks that were performed.
- Minimum 5 page reflective paper
Grading Criteria:
- Timeliness/punctuality (10%)
- Attitude/Cooperation (10%)
- Quality of work and degree to which student learning outcomes are achieved (55%)
- Reflective paper (25%)
Over the years, students have done their internships at a variety of public and private sector locations. Students have been placed at the following locations:
- South Jersey Legal Services
- Parker McCay
- New Jersey Office of the Public Defender
- Pepper Hamilton, LLC
- Florio Perrucci Steinhardt & Fader, LLC
- Begley & Gaskill
Students ready to enroll in LEX 235 should make an appointment to speak with the Paralegal Program Coordinator. Students can get assistance from the Coordinator to set up an internship placement or if a student has obtained a placement on their own and/or their current employer would serve as an appropriate placement then he or she should meet with the Coordinator to get approval.
There are a variety of professional organizations that have a dedicated focus to promote the paralegal profession, provide professional support, and offer educational resources. Many organizations offer student memberships, and students are encouraged to join to learn more about the profession, increase their chance for opportunities and expand their network, both locally and nationally.
Local:
- South Jersey Paralegal Association
- The Paralegal Association of New Jersey
- The Philadelphia Association of Paralegals
National:
This program is approved by the American Bar Association.
