Known as the "Cradle of Emancipation," Burlington County offers the Underground Railroad Museum at historic Smithville park.

The Burlington County Underground Railroad Museum traces the struggle for freedom from pre-slavery Africa. The museum has many authentic artifacts that give a shocking  effect to attendees. The museum documents racial injustice and honors activities including abolitionists and modern Black successes.

Rowan College at Burlington County has documented the contributions of the late Louise Calloway, the museum's original curator, so that future generations can benefit from her knowledge. Please visit the college's YouTube channel to learn more.
